Maybe this sounds familiar…

Your job is like clockwork – predictable in every way. The security guard greets you when you walk in the door for work. You clock in and take your things to your locker. You exchange hellos and your team checks in with your supervisor for the daily scrum. He begins to rattle off his list and your mind begins to drift. “If only there was something new you could do to change things up a bit.” It would be great to not feel so bored and burned out. Team members begin to call out how they’ll tackle the list, breaking up as they divide and conquer, but you’re still standing there daydreaming and staring at your supervisor.

You speak up, “Is there anything else you’re working on that I could help you with?” Flipping through his notepad, he shares how he’s been so busy lately he hasn’t had a chance to troubleshoot task XYZ. You do what you do well, but you haven’t ever done THAT before! You decide to be bold (rather than bored) and, hey, it doesn’t hurt to offer. If not you’ll just go back to the same old, same old. He thinks about it and agrees. The next thing you know, the two of you are working as a small team on a new project and you’re learning a new skill.
