What is a Software Developer?

Software Developers create computer applications and the underlying systems that run the devices or control networks. These allow users to do specific tasks. Software quality assurance analysts and testers design and execute software tests to identify problems and learn how the software works.

Why companies need Software Developers

The purpose of this role is to ensure that all parts of the software are running smoothly. This can be through analyst testing, designing, upgrading, doing quality control or even modifying the software. Developers do quality control and make sure that the software runs smoothly. If there are any issues, they are addressed in a swift manner. Software Developers are also in charge of making sure that the software caters to the user’s needs, and, if necessary, Developers are the ones that oversee customer evaluation.

What do Software Developers do?

A Developer owns what happens in the software development process. This includes: 

  • Analyzing what’s needed from users and then design and develop the right software for it.

  • Recommending the best software upgrades to customers’ existing programs and systems.
  • Designing all elements of the application or system and planning how it will work altogether.

  • Creating various models and diagrams depicting to programmers the software code that’s needed for an application to run.

  • Supervising the production of the software and the process in which it will be made.

  • Checking if the customer criteria for an application are met and ensure that they are.

  • Modifying or adapting the program when necessary.

  • Ensuring the continued functionality of a program through software maintenance and testing.

  • Documenting all aspects of an application or system to be used for future maintenance and upgrades.

In addition to these highlights there may be other tasks/actions that you will be asked to participate in or complete that coincide with accomplishing the organization’s objectives that are broader than the direct responsibilities of this in-demand job. 

Who manages you and who do you work with?

Developers report to either the head computer or info system manager or directly to the customer. You will work and coordinate with hardware engineers as well as programmers to get the program done.

The information below is a range of what you could be offered. Compensation and total rewards vary from company to company and your level of proficiency, match, experience, knowledge, and geography. 

  • Total Compensation Range: $86,060-$130,180
  • Employee Benefit, Programs, Perks: $5,000- $25,000 per year 
  • Paid Time Off and National Holidays  
  • Purpose or Impact Alignment between your interests and the companies’ objectives 

 All elements of the total rewards: base compensation, variable compensation, health, and welfare programs the offerings and the conditions of receiving or eligibility of such offerings are all subject to change. The company will provide any changes in writing prior to the effective date.
