What Does a Social Media Manager Do?

The Job

Social Media Manager

What is a Social Media Manager?

A Social Media Manager is an integral part of a marketing team. Social media managers plan, create, execute and measure the efficacy of social media marketing campaigns. They are also responsible for communicating with people via comments, direct messages and tagged posts. Further, Social Media Managers often handle brand safety on social media websites.

Why companies need Social Media Managers

The purpose of the Social Media Manager role is to increase online brand exposure and consideration, control the online appearance of the brand by interacting with social media users, find weaknesses and strengths in the brand’s social media strategy, and stay on top of social media trends and changes. The social media manager may need to provide their own creative or may work with a creative team.

How can I get paid the most?

Achieve your performance goals and measures of success.

  • Goals and deadlines are distributed and met.
  • Daily workflow is clear and efficient.
  • Operations are efficient.

What do Social Media Managers do?

  • Increase brand exposure and consideration: A social media manager’s chief task is to use social media to expand and keep a brand’s audience.

  • Control online brand sentiment: Through online conversations with social media users, social media managers troubleshoot problems, address false info and cheer on success stories. This may include using influencer tactics or social listening tools.

  • Find brand weaknesses and strengths: A strong brand offline is not always a strong brand online. Social media managers routinely look for the aspects of the brand they work with that people make fun of or outright hate, and social media managers create a plan to address those aspects. They also look for the aspects that people routinely talk about positively and relay that information to the marketing and sales teams.

  • Stay on top of social media trends and changes: With the internet, what’s popular one day isn’t even mentioned the next. Social media managers must stay on top of trends in content as well as changes in how content is delivered, dashboard layouts, major algorithmic changes, and more. The difference between going viral and being mocked is often just a matter of timing and knowing how to get your message out there.

  • Ensure all social media campaigns follow legal guidelines: While all marketing should strive for legal compliance, social media has a very unique set of hurdles that managers must overcome, especially when it comes to sponsored content, working with influencers or partnerships with other brands. Talk to your supervisor or legal team for details on how to navigate this.

In addition to these highlights there may be other tasks/actions that you will be asked to participate in or complete that coincide with accomplishing the organization’s objectives that are broader than the direct responsibilities of this in-demand job.
